Since the last
newsletter there have been several burglaries
of homes and businesses in the area. The
estates north of Tamborine-Oxenford Road seem to have been particularly
targeted. In many cases offenders are
jemmying the front or rear door, even breaking the door down to gain
entry.
The offenders
who have been caught to date have come from the Logan area. In many cases they have been looking for
jewellery, computers and anything that falls quickly to hand. If you have
valuables, such as computers and electrical items, they can be engraved or
marked with UV dye to aid identification.
Engravers are available from the Coomera Police Station, Coomera
District Crime Prevention Unit or from the Oxenford NHW. Marking your property makes it harder for
criminals to get rid of it.
Offenders
aren’t in a car, with some residents reporting ‘suspicious’ people in their mid
20’s riding skateboards around the area.
Another method criminals use is to walk around with a backpack and just
jump fences. Be wary of anyone
‘wandering about’ or coming to your door and asking strange questions.
Please watch
your neighbour’s house, and if you see anything suspicious call Coomera Police on 5519 5555 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
How well do
you know the road rules? The road rules constantly evolve, with
roundabout laws showing the greatest change over recent years. Anyone with teenagers will know how much
‘fatter’ the road rule book is compared to when we got our licence. Once a driver obtains their open driver’s
licence, no further testing is required, but
all drivers are required to know the current road rules.
The current ‘Your keys to driving in Queensland’
(road rules) is available on the Department of Transport and Main Roads website
at
http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Licensing/Learning-to-drive/Your-keys-to-driving-in-queensland.aspx.
You can test
your knowledge of the Queensland road rules with practice tests for car,
motorcycle and truck drivers available at https://www.service.transport.qld.gov.au/rrtexternal/SelectExam.jsp.
You have
undoubtedly heard the urban myth
where a thief breaks into a car, steals
the GPS device, and uses the device to find the victim’s home and break in,
knowing no one is there. Most GPS
devices prompt you to save your ‘home’ address, creating the risk that someone
will try to fulfil the urban myth. So,
what can you do about it? Fool the
thieves and enter an address (which isn’t a house) as ‘home’. Here are some suggested Oxenford addresses to
add as ‘home’ on your GPS device:
Movieworld: Lot 6 Entertainment
Drive
Woolworths: 2 Cottonwood Place
Coomera
River boat ramp:
33 Watersport Lane.
Hungry
Jacks restaurant:
160 Old Pacific Highway
