GOLD COAST CITY COUNCIL COMMUNITY SAFETY AWARDS 2009

The past twelve weeks have been difficult for my family and I - we have gone through swine flu, then my  16 yr old son fractured his hip and was bedridden for weeks - and three weeks ago my daughter needed an operation for an abscess on her spine.

Despite these 'calamities' of mine,  it has been an excellent winter when it comes to our Neighbourhood Watch group....and I am beginning to smile again.

Following on from my Area Coordinator of the Year Award (South East) at the NHW State Conference last week-end, this week I received the  Gold Coast City Council Biennial Community Safety Award for an 'Individual' during a morning tea hosted by the Mayor.

Our very own Sgt Doc Newman and Sgt Andrew Lake were also nominated and there we all are with our award certificates above.

Sgt Newman and Sgt Lake also appear above with deputy Mayor Daphne McDonald.

It was awesome to be in a room full of community ‘dynamos’ many of whom have amazing stories, strategies, diverse involvements and many successes  in their respective fields to share.

I wish I could have had time to speak with the winner of the Meritorious Award for Outstanding Contribution to Community Safety,  Kevin Folkes. The G.C. City Council's 'blurb' about Kevin reads, "Kevin  is committed to improving community safety throughout the city by providing health support services at the Palm Beach Community Health Centre. Mr Folkes’s work has included extensive support for drug dependent people, including help in finding suitable rehabilitation services, managing a needle and syringe program, promoting the clean needle helpline and educating the wider community on alcohol and drugs."
