Frequently asked questions re: Speeding

Q: How do I know that the speed detection device is accurate?

The testing and accuracy calibration of speed detection devices is in compliance with the relevant Australian Standard and the manufacturers guidelines conducted on a yearly basis. The police operator also field-tests the devices before and after each use in compliance with the necessary requirements as outlined by the manufacturer, Australian Standards and Queensland Police Service policy.

Q: What are the current penalties for speeding?

Current penalties for speeding are:

    • Less than 13 km/h over the speed limit: $A100 + 1 demerit point.
    • At least 13 km/h but not more than 20 km/h over the speed limit: $A150 + 3 demerit points.
      More than 20 km/h but not more than 30 km/h over the speed limit: $A250 + 4 demerit points.
    • More than 30 km/h but not more than 40 km/h over the speed limit: $A350 + 6 demerit points.
    • More than 40km/h over the speed limit: $A700 + 8 demerit points and 6 month suspension.
