M8S4LIFE CAMPAIGN

The M8S4LIFE Campaign is about educating people to the dangers of the Gold Coast waterways - which - every time it rains - become deadly.

The stormwater system criss-crosses the city to help take rainwater away from our streets and homes and send it to the ocean. The stormwater system is more than 2000 kilometres long. That’s longer than the distance from here to Sydney and back.

Some sections of stormwater drains are only a few metres long but others run for kilometres. They have pipes that narrow down and expand back out. They have pits and 6 metre debris traps with no ladders – and no means of escape.

The stormwater system is dangerous in the dry and can be deadly in the wet.

Just 15 centimetres of fast-moving floodwater can knock you off your feet.
Just 60 centimetres of water will carry away most cars.
For example, a small car will be swept off a causeway under just 45 centimetres of water.

People often think the weight of their car is a defence against depth, holding them down to the road. But they don’t realise that as a car displaces water, it weighs less. When it’s up to the
bottom of the doors, even slow flowing floodwater will simply float a car or light truck off the road.

If you’re in a car and come upon rapidly rising waters, turn around and find another route over higher ground away from rivers, streams, creeks and storm drains. Also, driving around barricades is not a good move, it puts you at risk as well as those who will have to rescue you when you get swept away.
