CRIMESTOPPERS - a success story

The Crime Stoppers program provides an avenue for the community as a whole to assist police to solve crimes and ultimately make our State a safer place to live, work and for  tourists to visit.

Roberta Cava from Crimestoppers was one of the speakers at our February meeting. It was amazing to hear of the wonderful work this organisation does.  Since 1989 community contact with Crime Stoppers Queensland has resulted in (as at 31 December 2013):

·         Over 699,570 phone calls and 19,661 website reports (web only since March 2007);
·         Over 25,610 offenders arrested with some 67,465 charges preferred;
·         Solved 21 Murders and 20 Attempted Murders;
·         Seized over $615.1 million worth of drugs;
·         Recovered $10.4 million worth of stolen property; and
·         Seized over $3.6 million in proceeds of crime.

Crime Stoppers has become the Queensland public’s most effective tool in the fight to solve crime. The Queensland program has some of the best results per capita in the world. Queensland’s continued success is in no small way due to:

·         the commitment of all its volunteer members associated with the program,
·         the dedication and hard work of the men and women of the Queensland Police Service, and
·         the Queensland public trusting Crimestoppers  to anonymously and confidentially manage their crime intelligence information.

Crime Stoppers provides a (toll-free) telephone hotline and website for members of the community to provide anonymous information about criminal activity. This information is electronically sent to the police establishment nearest to where the crime is occurring for investigation.  The caller need not give their name. Calls are not recorded or taped. Callers are not identified in any way. Callers are allocated a code number for three reasons:
    • To provide further information
    • To check on the progress of the investigation
    • To collect the reward.
Therefore, if you have any information please call Crimestoppers (anonymously) on 1 800 333 000 or go through the online version at www.crimestoppers.com.au
