DIVISION 2 GOLD COAST - COUNCILLOR CANDIDATES

With the local council elections looming, many residents have been asking me questions that range from "Which Division is Oxenford in?" to "Is John running again?" to "Who are the other candidates running in Div 2?".  

I had hoped to be able to simply put a link on this website to a site by say - the Gold Coast Bulletin - where I hoped  to find a list of the 14 Divisions and the incumbent and candidates listed  in each one. Alas, there is no such 'ready-reckoner' that I could find - although I do believe it would be very useful to many residents across the Gold Coast. So I have decided to do one for our area, Oxenford - which falls in Division 2.  

This Division also includes the suburbs of  Monterey Keys, Oyster Cove, Arundel, Helensvale, Studio Village, Regatta Waters, Coomera and areas of Upper Coomera.

The current (incumbent) Councillor for Div 2 is Cr John Wayne - who many of you will have met at the Oxenford Neighbourhood Watch meetings - is running again. John's bio, as it appears on the GCCC website is:

• Born in Sydney.
• Lived in various locations throughout Gold Coast City since the early 1960’s, Wongawallen resident for the past 14 years.
• Married to Elizabeth with six children and three amazing grandchildren.
• When time permits I love scuba diving, renovating, entertaining family and friends.
• Strong commitment to protecting public open space and our fabulous waterways.
• Prior to joining Gold Coast City Council, I had my own business as a Graphic Designer.

“I have been a resident of the Gold Coast for over 40 years and have lived in the Hinterland for the past 16 years. Father of six adult children and grandfather to three.  My working background is in Graphic Art and Design, which has given me the opportunity to work for and with, many new businesses to the Gold Coast since I commenced work in the 70s. My family has, and is still, fully entrenched in the hospitality industry, as well as the entertainment industry. Our children hold careers as Pharmacist, Environmental Scientist, small business owner, two PAs in the field of Real Estate and one in the construction industry - which means we are all enlightened as to the plight of business operators and residents on the Gold Coast. For many years, prior to my election into Council, we as a family worked on hundreds of community projects and initiatives; with the children often spending a night sleeping in the car as we attended night time public meetings. These were both for the benefit of local issues as well as whole of city concerns. This was as an active voluntary member of the community, not in a paid position or Directorial role. Whether I am re-elected or not, I shall continue to serve my community.”

"I am an Accountant by training who has worked on the Gold Coast since finishing a Commerce degree at Griffith University. I have completed my CPA qualifications and have been a Member of the CPA's Australia for the past twenty years.

Like many in our community I am concerned about the direction our City has taken in recent years. Rather than sit on the sidelines and 'throw stones' from November 2011 I will be campaigning to represent the residents and ratepayers in Division 2 at the forthcoming March 2012 Gold Coast City Council elections.

For the past twelve years I have been the Executive Director for a private company (Barkala Pty Ltd) now owned by the George Alexander Foundation. The Foundation is a private charity funding scholarship programs for talented teenagers as environmental programs throughout Australia.

In 2010 I finished a four year term as a Director of the affordable housing charity "Horizon Housing Company" based here on the Gold Coast."
