With the local council elections looming, many residents have been asking me questions that range from "Which Division is Oxenford in?" to "Is John running again?" to "Who are the other candidates running in Div 2?".
I had hoped to be able to simply put a link on this website to a site by say - the Gold Coast Bulletin - where I hoped to find a list of the 14 Divisions and the incumbent and candidates listed in each one. Alas, there is no such 'ready-reckoner' that I could find - although I do believe it would be very useful to many residents across the Gold Coast. So I have decided to do one for our area, Oxenford - which falls in Division 2.
This Division also includes the suburbs of Monterey Keys, Oyster Cove, Arundel, Helensvale, Studio Village, Regatta Waters, Coomera and areas of Upper Coomera.
The current (incumbent) Councillor for Div 2 is Cr John Wayne - who many of you will have met at the Oxenford Neighbourhood Watch meetings - is running again. John's bio, as it appears on the GCCC website is:
John has a facebook page HERE - his mobile number is 0439 226 147 and you can email him at division2@goldcoast.qld.gov.au
Also running in Div 2 in the April 2012 local council elections are Simon Durante and William Owen Jones.
William Owen Jones - you will find his facebook page HERE and his website HERE
Contact details for William are: 0412 242 622 and william@willdo2.com
"I am an Accountant by training who has worked on the Gold Coast since finishing a Commerce degree at Griffith University. I have completed my CPA qualifications and have been a Member of the CPA's Australia for the past twenty years.
Like many in our community I am concerned about the direction our City has taken in recent years. Rather than sit on the sidelines and 'throw stones' from November 2011 I will be campaigning to represent the residents and ratepayers in Division 2 at the forthcoming March 2012 Gold Coast City Council elections.
For the past twelve years I have been the Executive Director for a private company (Barkala Pty Ltd) now owned by the George Alexander Foundation. The Foundation is a private charity funding scholarship programs for talented teenagers as environmental programs throughout Australia.
In 2010 I finished a four year term as a Director of the affordable housing charity "Horizon Housing Company" based here on the Gold Coast."
Simon Durante - you'll find his facebook page HERE and his website HERE
Contact details for Simon are: 0418 521 341 and simonscampaign@gmail.com
Bio from Simon Durante's website: "As a local, a father, husband and a businessman, Simon’s vision for Division 2 is to develop community services to build a safer environment for our children and to enhance our quality of life.
He will endeavour to develop a greater synergy between small business and community to drive greater employment opportunity, development and trade relations, and to make Division 2 the best it can be.
Owning and running “Simon’s Luv A Coffee” cafĂ© at Oxenford for the past 10 years, has given Simon firsthand experience of the issues facing people in their everyday lives. Simon believes this experience and knowledge is invaluable for him as a representative of Division 2, and will enable him to be a strong and understanding voice for the local community."
