What is a missing person?
Any person, whether an adult or a child, reported to police whose whereabouts is unknown and where there are reasonable and justified fears for the safety or concerns for the welfare of that person.When can I report a person missing?
There is no time limit when a person can be reported missing. If you have concerns for the safety or welfare of a person then contact your local police Station.What do I do if I see a missing person?
Let your local police know. Information can also be passed to the Missing Persons Unit on telephone 61 7 3364 6213 (international) or 1800 017 744 (within Australia), or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 (free call within Australia). Any information received will be treated in confidence.What if I am reported missing?
You are reported missing because someone is concerned about you. It is vital that police are informed of your whereabouts and safety/welfare.Your whereabouts can be kept confidential if you are over the age of 18 years and do not want any person to know, however, the person reporting you missing will be advised that you are safe and well.
If you are under 18 years of age, your whereabouts will not be disclosed if it will endanger you. Police are anxious to ensure your safety before this information is released.
Missing Persons Unit
The Missing Persons Unit has a number of functions including -- Receiving information in relation to missing persons but do not take initial reports of missing persons. This information is taken by your local police;
- Overviewing and assisting in the investigation of all missing persons reports;
- Reviewing all outstanding missing person reports after a specified period and referring suspicious and out of character disappearances to the Homicide Investigation Unit; and
- Maintaining a record of unidentified bodies located in Queensland and assisting with efforts to establish their identity.
