Unfortunately the thieves haven’t found honest work, so I have included the 10 commandments of home security
1. Have your front & rear doors locked with a key. If you’re in the front yard, lock the back door and vice versa.
2. Have working key locks on your windows, and have the same key for all windows. Locking windows means that you can have them slightly open for airflow.
3. Have your door, deadlocks, and window locks keyed alike. That way you don’t have keys left in locks, nailed beside windows, sitting nearby. Have a set of keys for all adults in the house & hide any spare sets.
4. Have security screens/mesh on bedroom windows and external doors, and other windows that you want to keep open. Australian Standard screens with triple-locks are strongly recommended, beware of cheap ‘safety screens’.
5. Install a deadlock on the door between the garage & the house. Electronic garage doors are a known weak point.
6. Engrave your valuables. NHW have engravers as well as all Police Stations. Thieves don’t like engraved electronic items as they are harder to get rid of.
7. Get to know your neighbours. Know who lives in your street and their cars. Watch out for them, and they can watch out for you. Thieves hate anyone who notices them.
8. Put up a NHW letterbox sign and stickers. This lets thieves know that you live in a community that watches out for their neighbours.
9. Come to the NHW meeting. Not only will you get to know what is going on in the area, you will get to meet new people, learn new things, and find out what is going on.
10. Tell Police if you see something suspicious. Coomera Police can be contacted at 5573 6111 or 000 in an emergency (A thief climbing through your neighbour’s window IS an emergency).
Whilst the suggestions won’t stop all criminal activity, making YOUR house harder than the rest may mean that you aren’t a victim of crime. See you at the next meeting.
Regards,
Sergeant Andrew Lake
