HOON HOTLINE - REPORT A HOON IN QUEENSLAND ON 13-HOON

Queenslanders  will soon be able to report car hoons through a special police hotline - this is great news  and forms part of plans to combat the thousands of revheads terrorising neighbourhoods across the state.

Police Minister Neil Roberts will  - on  December 13 -  reveal  the launch day for a new phone line - 13HOON - aimed at  providing a memorable contact point and reducing the burden on  the triple-0 emergency number.

Mr Roberts said people would need to  provide  details including the hoon's car registration, vehicle description and location of the hooning when they called.

"Queenslanders told us that they were fed up with hoons taking to our streets doing burn-outs, engaging in illegal drag racing and generally driving in an unsafe manner," Mr Roberts said.

Incidents with no immediate danger will be forwarded to a police operations centre to have units respond when available, but triple-0 should  still be called for urgent hoon cases.
Mr Roberts said the new hotline gave an easy-to-remember central contact point to report hoons.

"The Queensland Police Service emphasises that community members should not place themselves at
risk to report this antisocial behaviour," he said.

CYCLONE, STORM, FLOOD, TSUNAMI?

With the school holidays fast-approaching - here's a useful activity for older children to take part in - put together an emergency kit! We hope you never need to use it, but an emergency kit could be the difference between life and death in times of crisis. Here's some info from Gold Coast City Council's website.

Disasters often strike quickly, sometimes without warning, so being prepared before any major incident is vital. This ready-reference checklist will help you fill your emergency kit with the right supplies to cope in an emergency situation.

Download Gold Coast City Council's  emergency kit checklist (PDF 87kb)

Remember to store your emergency kit in a sturdy waterproof container or bag that is easy to carry. Ensure it's kept in a convenient place known to all family members and it's wise to keep a smaller version in the boot of your car.

Regularly change your stored water and food supplies (food should be rotated every six months to stay fresh). Assess your kit and family needs at least once a year and replace batteries.

For more information, view the Queensland Government emergency fact sheets:

Click here for Emergency Management Queensland Be Prepared fact sheets

Check your first aid kit

First aid supplies are an important part of your emergency kit. The Queensland Ambulance Service recommends you include the following items as part of your first aid kit:

one packet of bandaids

one roll of non allergenic tape

two sterile eye pads

four triangular bandages

one conforming gauze bandage

one sterile combine dressing

one pair of stainless steel scissors

two square gauze swabs

one bottle antiseptic cream

one wound closure steri-strip

one bottle antiseptic solution

five alcohol swabs

THE NOT SO FANTASTIC MR FOX

Around this time last year a fox was taking chickens in Oxenford in the Mendooran Ct area at the top of Brentwood Terrace. A member of our Neighbourhood Watch group - an ex-veterinary nurse - thought the fox looked diseased (mange) and was in contact with the RSPCA. The RSPCA investigated, said that the fox was most probably living in the drains and the setting of traps for relocation was discussed.

Then in early February 2010 we had the floods and  the fox was never seen again - we all drew the conclusion that it drowned in the drain.

However...I received an email today (22nd November) from a resident at the Regatta Waters end of Riversdale Rd...

"We believe we had  a fox  in our yard last night (Nov 17th) around 1:30am that we disturbed in the process of removing a deceased chicken. Six others had been very badly scruffed around the neck (2 others dying from this), but not like what a domestic dog would do. We also have two dogs who slept through the whole thing only metres away. The fox returned the following night (Nov 18th) - dug under the fence - but our chooks were locked away."

When I sent out an email notice about this to the 200 or so residents on our emailing list, I received this from another resident...

"Just confirming your suspicion about the Fox given that I recently saw the carcass of a rather large Hare which had been attacked and severely ravaged when I was taking my daily walk around the Regatta Waters Lake walking track last week (probably 5 pm-ish last Wednesday 17th Nov.). The mangled carcass was located just on the grass just off the walking track on the Coomera River side of the walking track at the eastern end of the track just adjacent to where the 'work-out equipment' is located.

The carcass was simply 4 x furry longish legs with a limp fury head because the entire torso of the animal had been savagely eaten away leaving just the skeletal remains of the animal. (it looked pretty gruesome even for something a simple as a hare carcass).

I would think that the area close to where the hare carcass was located would probably be the ideal place for a fox or feral animal to hang out as there is plenty of long grass to conceal itself and also quite a few medium sized and larger riverfront trees to climb up or live close to as this is quite a fair distance away from the walking track once the path bends away to head east to the top of the lake."

So, if you have spotted a fox or signs of fox activity  in  Oxenford, please email us so that we can map its territory. A fox's territory is usually about 2-5 square kilometres as the two 'sightings' above would  appear to confirm.

We could then  pass this information on to the RSPCA who will hopefully be able to trap the animal and move it  to a more suitable rural area.

DO NOT KNOCK CAMPAIGN AND STICKER

Are you sick of salespeople door knocking your home?

Consumer Action Australia has released a “Do Not Knock” sticker, which warns sales representatives that they are in breach of the law if they knock on a door to which the sticker is affixed.

A PDF version of the sticker (obviously for you to print - hence non-sticky - is available from their site (see link below) - alternatively you can send a stamped, self addressed envelope to CONSUMER ACTION LAW CENTRE STICKER Level 7, 459 Lt Collins St, Melbourne, Victoria, 3000 should you want a proper 'sticky sticker' mailed to you.

If you have a 'Do Not Knock' sticker clearly displayed in front of your house, and a salesperson subsequently knocks on your door, you can then complain about their conduct and the site even gives you 2 letter templates – one designed for the company of the sales representative and one designed for the relevant regulator or complaints handling body.

BRISBANE POLICE MUSEUM LECTURE SERIES

November 28th
11am - 12.30pm

The Oxley Murder 1899 – A Modern Look at an Old Crime

On January 7, 1899 the badly decomposed body of a young boy was found in a paddock on the outskirts of Oxley.

The crime scene was a carefully staged arrangement that posed more questions than it answered. A well known schoolmaster who's sordid past covered three continents was the only suspect to the murder of Alfred Stephen Hill.

The presentation titled The Tainted Cross - A Modern Look at an Old Crime, will be led by author, Caroline Stevenson, who will look at the investigation from the viewpoint of a true crime writer, and discuss both the crime itself and the difficulties in recreating a murder investigation over a century old.

Ms Stevenson will outline one of the most intriguing murder investigations in the history of Australian crime, which sent shockwaves throughout Australia and continues to gain interest from both professionals and amateurs alike.

The one-and-a-half hour presentation will begin at 11am on Sunday, November 28 and will provide educational and up-to-date content suitable for all audiences.

The Museum opens its doors to the public on the last Sunday of each month from 10am to 3pm from February to November in addition to the standard Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm opening hours. Monthly Sunday openings feature guest speakers from across the historical and crime-solving spectrums.

PLEASE NOTE: The Police Museum will open Sunday November 28 from 10am to 3pm and is located on the ground floor of Police Headquarters, 200 Roma Street, Brisbane.

Please pass this information onto your family, friends and other networks.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH MEETING PHOTOS NOVEMBER 2010

Here are some images from the meeting last night of Oxenford Neighbourhood Watch. The speaker was Acting Sgt Rob Buckingham who brought along a speed camera van and gave a really interesting talk about its workings and the questions were many.

Our Division 2 Councillor John Wayne has never missed a meeting and once again addressed us all and brought us up to date with happenings and plans for Oxenford - for example did you know that we are going to have a new Bunnings store in Oxenford by 2012?

That's me inside the speed camera van - the back of the van has  a desk and a chair where you sit and can look out through the back window of the van.

Police Liaison Officer Sgt Andrew Lake and Area Coordinator Dominique Lummus during the meeting.

After the meeting we always socialise. Many bring a plate to share and we offer free tea, coffee and wine.

MICRODOT GOLD COAST AUSTRALIA

Microdot technology is an easy and modern way of marking private property to deter theft and to assist Police in identifying ownership of lost or stolen property.

Microdots are immersed in a clear water-based adhesive that contains ultra-violet trace elements to assist Police in microdot detection. The microdots are applied to property using an aerosol can or cotton bud. Each microdot (about the size of a grain of sand) is laser etched with a unique identifying number which is invisible to the naked eye. The unique number is then registered with the Queensland Police Service.

The Queensland Police Service is equipped with ultra-violet detection equipment to detect microdots, increasing the chances of returning stolen or lost property to owners and assisting with the prosecution of property offenders.

Electrical appliances, CD’s, jewellery, hand tools, bicycles, marine, and car equipment can all be marked with microdot technology.

Microdot Kits also contain door and window stickers that warn offenders property is marked for Police identification.

The residential and business community can purchase microdot technology from any Police-Citizen’s Youth Club located at:

Gold Coast PCYC, 180 Monaco Street, Broadbeach Waters - (07) 5538 5201

Nerang PCYC, Cayuga Street, Nerang - (07) 5578 2227

COMPUTER ANTI VIRUS - TELEPHONE SCAM

Police are warning members of the public to be vigilant with regards to internet security following reports of a scam targeting victims on the Sunshine Coast.

Residents from the Sunshine Coast have reported a telephone-based credit card scam which involves a group claiming to be from an online computer company cold calling victims at home, asking them to log onto their computers and to load the company’s website.

Upon doing so, victims are requested to run programs that give the impression there is something wrong with their computers. The offenders then offer to sell the victims software they claim will fix their computers, however victims are unknowingly downloading software which trawls the computer looking for personal information (including credit card details) which is then sent to the offenders.

The offenders are said to be aggressive and usually hang up when challenged.

Scammers are also making calls to potential victims indicating they work for Microsoft and need to gain remote access to the victim’s computer to fix a bug in the system.

“Unwary victims who provide this remote access are literally handing their computer and control of their computer to offenders who could use it to steal their personal and financial information, plant keylogger Trojans (software planted on your system to record keystrokes such as passwords or log ins) or use the computer to attack other machines or systems,” Detective Superintendent Brian Hay of the State Crime Operations Command Fraud and Corporate Crime Group said.

“The message is to always be careful of anti-virus pop ups and take a moment to carefully check on anything before you hit ‘accept’. Do not respond to messages or emails from anti-virus companies offering to run free scans on your computer or reminding you that your system requires it’s annual subscription upgrade. These scams are now recognised as the third most successful scam in the world. Unsuspecting victims, thinking they are doing the right thing are not only infecting their computers with potential malware (software planted on your computer that can be used to retrieve data or take control of your computer), but potentially surrendering their identity and credit card details,” he said.

Anyone with information which could assist police with their investigations should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day. Crime Stoppers is a charitable community volunteer organisation working in partnership with the Queensland Police Service.
