WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE BURGLED?

If you suspect someone is inside your home, do not go inside. Go to a neighbour’s house and contact the police on 000.

If you see an intruder leaving, make a note or
memorise a description of him/her, the vehicle
and number plate.

If the burglar has gone, do not touch anything.
It may need to be fingerprinted.

Itemise what has been taken. Keep notes, you
may even notice items missing several days
after the burglary.

Contact your insurance company and arrange
for an assessor to visit your home.

Some Items Need Immediate Attention
Credit cards and cheque books are not
transferable. In most circumstances you are
not responsible for illegal use of credit cards

AFTER you have reported their disappearance.

Remember that if you have been burgled,
you have a one in four greater chance of being
burgled again in the next 12 months.

INCREASE YOUR SECURITY

Evaluate the security areas in your house:

windows, doors and lights.
Install deadbolt locks.
Hinge doors so no pins can be removed
from the outside.
Consider increasing the security of your
windows by installing locks.
For sliding windows and doors purchase a slide
lock with a key. These are designed to prevent
patio type doors from being forced open.

Consider having a peephole installed in your
outside door. You will not have to open your
door to determine the identity of your caller.

When you move into a new house or apartment,
have new locks installed.

Proper and creative lighting of your premises
and home not only makes you feel secure but
makes your property safer.

If you are away from your house, use timers
on various lights within your home to give the
‘message’ that your residence is inhabited. It can
also be useful to leave a radio or TV playing to
give the impression that someone is home.

ADDITIONAL WAYS TO PROTECT
YOURSELF AT HOME

Do not keep large amounts of money or
other valuables at home.

Lock outside doors at all times, even when
you are at home.

Do not open the door to strangers without
checking that they are who they say they are.
Ensure that your garage and tool shed
are locked.

Minimise shrubbery and other obstructions
in your yard that could conceal an intruder.

SOME WAYS TO PROTECT YOURSELF
WHEN YOU ARE AWAY FROM HOME

Purchase a timer to switch lights on and off.
Arrange to have mail, milk and newspaper
deliveries discontinued or taken care of by
a responsible neighbour.

Inform trusted neighbours and local police
of your travel plans.

HELP THE POLICE HELP YOU

Write down the license numbers of vehicles
used by suspicious persons in your
neighbourhood.

Keep an inventory of valuables so you will
know immediately if anything is missing.
Include photographs of jewellery and serial
numbers of other costly items.

GRAFFITI - PLEASE REPORT IT WHENEVER YOU SEE IT

We are lucky in Oxenford - our crime figures are low - however we do have our fair share of graffiti and I encourage you all to please report any 'scrawls' that you see. The council are very good and quick at removing it once it is reported - their system really works well. Please don't shrug your shoulders andthink that someone else will reported it - the council don't mind receiveing 3 calls or emails about the same 'tag' - better that it is reported 3 times than not at all.

You may think that graffiti is a trivial matter - however if you're a homeowner or local business owner you should care about its affect on your neighbourhood and on property prices.... please read on...

Graffiti is a crime of wilful damage under the Queensland Criminal Code Act (s469).
Graffiti is illegal, ugly and expensive to remove. Graffiti is a crime that affects us all. It can lower property values, make people feel unsafe, reduce business patronage and encourage other types of crime.

Conversely, keeping business premises graffiti-free helps to reinforce a professional image with customers, while keeping our neighbourhood graffiti-free reinforces pride in our lovely leafy suburb and helps to maintain feelings of safety and wellbeing.

Graffiti vandals have no respect for private or community property and no regard for the negative impacts of their actions. Their aim is to impress their peers and strengthen their reputations, by putting their graffiti tags in as many places as possible.

Graffiti that is left intact attracts more graffiti and the longer it remains, the greater the gratification for perpetrators. It also suggests that a community does not care or is unable to deal with the problem.

You can help us to stay on top of graffiti vandalism by taking measures to prevent it, and if it does occur, by making sure it is cleaned as quickly as possible. Read more on this topic by clicking on the links below:
To report graffiti on Council, Energex or other private properties, please call our hotline on (07) 5581 7998. If the graffiti is on your property, please complete the graffiti removal consent form and email it to graffiti@goldcoast.qld.gov.au or fax (07) 5581 7946.

LINK TO AWESOME AERIAL PICS OF OXENFORD

I was visiting http://www.regattawaters.com/ and clicked on a link that from there takes you to Skyepics.com.au.

At this site they have uploaded a heap of aerial views of Oxenford which are just awesome. The page is at http://www.skyepics.com.au/pages/browse.php?suburb_id=217 and when it opens you will see a page of thumbnails - click on the one that you think your home may appear on and a larger pic will open.

From that page you have the ability to zoom in and the quality is great - much more detailed and sharp than the Google satellite images I usually post on here... the photos are mainly of the area around Regatta Waters - so you may not find your home there if - like me - you live in the older area...

They are also very recent pics because they show the new dual carriage way link that runs along Regatta Waters.

Well worth a visit...and if you'd like a copy of the photo that your business or home appears on, you have the option to purchase it from the site with prices ranging from $22 to $99 for a jpg or tiff image.

SNAKE HANDLERS' FACT-SHEET

This is the fact -sheet brought along by snake handlers Jaap Vogel and Vanessa Bull to our Tuesday evening meeting - I am posting it to the blog for those who wish to print off a copy - to do so, click on the image first to view it full size - then press CONTROL and the letter P on your keyboard to print it.

AUGUST 2009 MEETING and AGM

Our August meeting was also an AGM and the Executive Committee remains unchanged with Ron as Treasurer, Ursula as Secretary and myself as Area Coordinator for a 2nd year. Sgt Doc Newman is our Police Liaison Officer and Pauline remains as our newsletter editor. Adelle is in charge of newsletter distribution and Alf and Elsie will also continue as committee members. Unfortunately, due work committements Sgt Andrew Lake announced his need to scale back his involvement with our group and this has saddenned us all.
Jaap Vogel and Vanessa Bull - volunteer snake handlers and re-locators from Mt Tamborine came to talk about snake behaviour, identification and demonstrated first aid. This talk was educational and enthralling and peppered with some great and very funny stories from Vanessa and Jaap's travels! They also surprised us all by being able to bring a carpet snake to the meeting after all!
I received a Certificate of Appreciation of which I am very proud from the Assistant Commissioner for the South Eastern region, P.A. Wilson, for the part I played in passing on information from a local resident that recently lead to the nomination of suspects.
I was also given some more very good news this week - I have won the Area Coordinator of the Year award for the Gold Coast region and will be presented with an award at the state conference in October. This has much to do with the fact that I have implemented much technology into the way our group is run and we have enjoyed many successes because of this. In fact, I am to give a talk on Workshop Day of the state conference about how this was achieved and the many benefits information technology brings to our group.
Our next meeting was scheduled for Tuesday 10th November.

Thank you once again to the wonderful Sarah Gordon for taking photographs at the meeting.

Oxenford NHW Monthly Report

During July the Oxenford State School has been broken into twice. Both times a lot of damage has been caused, with little or nothing stolen. There should be no reason for anyone to be in the school grounds at night or on weekends. If you see anyone in the grounds call School Watch on 131788, or Coomera Police on 5519 5555.

A ski boat on a trailer was stolen from a house driveway in Regatta Waters.

A granny flat & shed was broken into at Georgina Street with electrical items and tools stolen.

Offenders, possibly juveniles, broke into a fenced business on the Old Pacific Highway & smashed car & shop windows. No other property was stolen.

Full details of these and other offences will be provided at the next NHW meeting on 11 August at the Oxenford Youth Centre. If you see anything suspicious call Coomera Police or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
